The snake

Tim was out mowing the lawn last Thursday when he comes in the house with some news. He wounded a garter snake and thought the kids would want to see it. Of course, my creepy crawlie lovin kids bounded outside to take a look.

Just the sight I want to see on my back patio.
Tim wounded it (or ran it over) and knew the kids would want to take a look.  After some initial pokes with a stick and the realization that it wasn't going to move too fast, they decide to pick it up with the assistance of a stick.  Then,  Emma started to pet the snake.  Evan though, didn't get up the nerve.  Emma then, got up the nerve to pick it up with her own hands.  Yuck for me - but of course, playing the supportive Mom the whole time, I talked about how good snakes are and what role they play in the environment.

So proud of herself.
Evan wasn't quite as brave.  He did pick it up with a stick but didn't want any part in touching it.
Yes, it is good that they have an appreciation for wildlife... but snakes?? I am not so sure about that one.
